I'll have more details for you soon. Coaches, prepare to be active!

It appears as if I will return to my old stomping grounds as the Head 8th grade coach at Daniel Boone Middle school. In cooperating with our varsity,  I will be coaching a multiple I formation attack and 50 front defense. The best part is being a member of a strong staff with a winning program. I look forward to building the finest middle school program in the country. We will develop boys into young men who love the great game of football. They will be "football smart", have a stong work ethic, discipline and great fundamentals in preparation for high school football. They will also get a very good education on the varsity core plays and terminology. Since I teach and coach in the same building, football will be the best taught subject in the school! Well, at least it will be a hot topic anyhow.  NO DOUBT, they will not find anyone who cares about the success of these boys more than I do.

12/07/05   If you are thinking of ordering Double Wing or 46 Gambler materials for Christmas or other holiday gift, please be aware of the suggested USPS Priority Shipping deadlines.

Best Wildcat team in school history
Whittier Tech junior Jay Pena, one of the top scorers in the state, has spearheaded the Wildcats to their best season in school history. Whittier hosts Cathedral High on Thanksgiving Day (10 a.m.) and then plays in the large school title game of the state's Vocational School Football Championships Dec. 1 at Worcester State College.

"Since the second week of this historic 2005 season, many members of the Whittier Tech football team have been meeting every Saturday at a Lawrence Chinese restaurant for a post-game buffet.

The Wildcat players started the weekly egg-roll and chicken-wing fest after their five-overtime 58-56 win over Shawsheen Tech. About 40 players showed up that day with Coach Kevin Bradley arriving unexpectedly to pick up the tab.

The Chinese food is "very good," according to tight end Frank Richardson, but the weekly buffets have served a more important purpose than filling hungry Wildcats' bellies — helping the team bond.

"The hardest part (about playing at a vocational school) is that the kids do not come from the same city," Bradley said. "Kids come from all over and do not really know each other. But sports brings them together, and the fact that so many of them are going out together after games helps bring them even closer. There's good camaraderie on this team and you can see that in the way we play."

The 2005 Wildcats have played like no Whittier team in school history, as they are the highest scoring team in the state (34.3 points per game) and have qualified for the postseason for the first time.

The Wildcats (9-1) will meet either Worcester Vocational High School or Bristol Plymouth Vocational Tech School in the large school title game of the state's Vocational School Football Championships Dec. 1 at Worcester State College. Whittier's Super Bowl opponent will be determined on Thanksgiving Day.

The Wildcats have business — other than eating — to take care of on Turkey Day, when they conclude their regular season at home (10 a.m.) against Cathedral High.

"Cathedral (6-4) is big and talented," Bradley said. "Our kids are excited about going to the Super Bowl, but they know we have one more game to go (before the Super Bowl) and we want to finish our (regular) season with a win."

Whittier's prolific offense has scored so many points this season that Bradley has received frequent calls from coaches around the state requesting films of the team's games. The Wildcats run what Bradley calls the "diesel offense."

"We came up with "diesel" because it's a powerful offense. Last year it was 'snowplow' but we added things to make this year's offense even more powerful," Bradley said. "We do some unique things. There's lots of motion in the backfield. We use an unbalanced line. We substitute guys in and out like a basketball team so everyone is fresh. We line up Jay (Pena), a running back, at quarterback and have him do different things.

"People want to know how we are doing it (scoring points)," Bradley continued. "It sounds complicated but most of these kids got experience playing it last year and we (coaches) have made it very simple. When I coached in college the playbook was 400 pages. Our playbook now can fit inside an envelope."

The Whittier offense, which is averaging an eye-popping 8.7 rushing yards per carry, revolves around the junior duo of Jay Pena (108 points) and Joel Penney (78), who rank third and eighth in Eastern Mass. Div. 3 scoring, respectively.

Pena has been as versatile as a Swiss Army knife, lining up at running back, quarterback, wide receiver, tight end and safety in addition to returning kickoffs and punt returns. In the team's five-overtime win over Shawsheen, Pena scored all five of the team's touchdowns in overtime. He has also returned four interceptions for touchdowns from his safety position.

"We call Jay 'Slash,'" Bradley said of the 6-foot-1 Pena. "He is so talented. He is the best player in the conference and a number of coaches have told me they think he is the best player in the state."

Pena said the team's goal since training camp was to make it to the Super Bowl. He also put to rest the notion that he is a one-man show.

"We want to win it (Super Bowl)," Pena said. "And we think we can play with anybody. We have got a lot of guys on this team who can score points — it's not just me."

Along with Pena and Penney, who have combined for 186 points, senior Mark Burns, a three-year starter, has scored 42 points and Walter Torres has amassed 32.

In addition to playing football, Burns is working a co-op job in heating, air conditioning and ventilation.

"I am up on top of big buildings, skyscrapers, during the day and then I come to practice after work. It's a busy schedule but I love playing football," said Burns, a Nettle School graduate ranked in the top 10 in his class.

After last season's surprising 7-4 season, Burns said he knew this year's team would be special, noting that most of the players from last year's team were underclassmen and have improved.

As good as this season's team is, next year's Wildcats may be even better, as all of the team's skill position players, including Pena, Penney and quarterback James Fournier, return next season.

But before anyone installs the 2006 Wildcats as Super Bowl favorites, two games remain in 2005, two games these Chinese-food-loving Wildcats are hungry to win.

"It's been such a great season," Richardson said. "But we want to go out with a couple of wins. We want to go out winning a Super Bowl."

TECH WINS AGAIN, NOW 10-1

11/13/05   Whittier Tech advances to Mass. "SUPERBOWL" state championship.

"HI STEVE WELL WE DID  IT TODAY AS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE SCHOOL HISTORY WE ARE GOING TO THE STATE SUPERBOWL.WE WON TODAY  37-8 IN A BIG GAME.AS I KEEP PROMISING YOU I WILL GET THIS FILM TO YOU ON MONDAY. HEY WE ARE PLAYING SO WELL NOW WE DOMINATE..426 YDS TOTAL OFFENSE  62 IN THE AIR, AS WE ARE PASSING NOW SOMETHING WE COULDN'T DO BEFORE.. ANY WAY I WANT YOU TO SEE THIS OFFENSE AND LET ME KNOW WHAT TO DO.THIS WAS SUPPOSE TO BE A BIG BIG GAME. THANKS"-KB

10/23/05 "Steve, we did it ! 2005 Champions!!!!  27-6, the Gambler shut them down.  We played it the right way and just smothered them all day.  I appreciate all the advice and help early this year and during the season. "- Josh

Congratulations to Mike Tokarsky's Triple B / 46 Gambler JV team, capped off a perfect season, 35-0.- great job coaches and players!!!

10/19/05  "Hey Coach... With another normal week of practice behind us, tonight's game against an opponant that has kicked the crud out of us the last 4 years ended with a win for us with the score 30 to 0. Yes sir, we've got that double wing rolling now.  They started blitzing and crowding the line with at least 9 in the box.  We threw a grand total of 2 passes and they were both incomplete.  Needless to say we didn't need to complete them anyway.  You should have seen the faces of the other coaches.  He, he, he...They've never lost to us while I've been the coach.  The times they are a changin'.Thanks a lot for a great offense."- Chad

10/17/05  "BTW, beat another DW team 32-0 this weekend. All their coach had to say was, "sorry we didn't show up and give you guys some competition." They had the same record as us (6-0) coming into the game and were scoring an average of 30 points and giving up less than 6 per game. He was debating me prior to the game as to which DW system was the best, Markham, Wyatt, Calande, etc. Best I could tell, he was using some hybrid system, never put his backs in motion. I believe that Calande's DW and Gambler 46 won that particular day.
You know it's really working when the coaches of next week's opponent start asking for mercy a week before you play them. LOL, I even offered to give them some game film of us."-AGCoach

10/14/05 "Steve,  Got a call from a sports reporter w/ Washington Post today. They are interested in doing a story on my TB. The kid who has scored 17TDs from Calande SW. Seems that word has been getting around. I'll keep you posted."-Tom

(YES, I STILL SELL THE SINGLE WING TAPE, THOUGH ITS PRETTY BEAT UP)

10/13/05  "Coaches, We are now 6-1 with one more game to go and the score was 34-0.Offensive stats: 42 carries for 222 yards and 5 td's
Scored on beast left sweep, wedge, beast blast, 416 option and 46 power 2 passes completed for 2 extra points "-Jim

"Coaches,We won on sun 34-0 and here are the defensive stats.they had 26 carries for -7 yards and we recovered 3 fumbles my nose guard had 6 tackles and is blowing up all inside plays, my mike had 5 and my second line ng had 5 as did my second line d-tackle both second line guys are quick and aggressive the other team never ran right if you can beleive that they had 1 first down and about 10 fumbles between the center and qb that they recovered I HAVE NO IDEA WHY I WAITED TILL THIS YEAR TO RUN THE 46!!!!!!! Big game on sun against only undefeated team in league and my starting de and 1 back went on vacation but I think his replacements will do their jobs."  -Jim

10/09/05  Ive been informed that Whittier Tech High school won this weekend 32-0 to move to 5-0 and currently leads Mass. in scoring at the high school level. Congrats to Coach Bradley!

Heres another update- "We won are last league game 14-6 last night, this takes are record to 10-0.We also won an out of league game Saturday 24-6.We have one more game to play Saturday OCT.22.A big thank you goes out to Coach Calande, and also to all the other coaches for sharing info with us all."- kryj

.....heres another update from another successful Double Wing team..."Steve,DW and Gambler are now 6-0.  We beat what I thought would be our toughest opponent  26-6 on Sunday. We gave up our first TD of the year.My corner slipped in the mud in pass coverage and it cost us 6. Season to date we have outscored opponents 160 - 6. Playoffs are right around the corner and I'm still trying to sure up my D for the tougher competition we'll face in the playoffs"- Mark

10/9/05   another Double Wing update : "Well Steve, we played a flawless game today winning 32-0 allowing us to move to the semi's next week against a team who has not lost.  The first play of the game was Lee 45 Power it went 60 yards to the house.  I did not expect to win this way, but those kids played outstanding today.  Our wedge team scored again and moved the ball almost at will.  If there was anyone there scouting us we did not give much away.  It was powers and wedges all day.  We ran one counter and scored.  Thanks for the advice." -Josh

10/7/05  Send me your season Double Wing / 46 Gambler updates! Here is one I got today :

"Coach Steve: Just a quick update on our season so far: We are now 5-1, with only loss still to the defending League Champs in first game (still hope to catch them again in the Playoffs - we're greatly improved now since the first game of the season against them). You can still see our game scores and results on:  bulldogsfb.com I need to update our league standings on the website. We are currently tied for 2nd Place with another 5-1 team that we haven't played yet. Remember this is a team that only won 1 game last year as 10 yr, olds. We owe a ton of gratitude to the DW and the 46 Gambler, and to you personally. I have videoed every game and studied them extensively. You're right, it is an invaluable tool for spotting critical mistakes and being able to correct them next practice. Also valuable for studying opposing linebacker and secondary flow vs. Powers, Counters and Traps for future reference in games.Hope you and wife are doing well." Coach Stevens
